It is very common for smartphones to get wet during the rainy season. Sometimes the phone can get wet due to falling in water in the bathroom, or even due to a cold drink or tea falling on the phone. But there is no need to panic. Your device can be saved by taking quick and correct action. Let us know what you have to do if your phone gets wet.
Turn off the phone
The first thing to do is to turn off the phone immediately. Do not try to check whether the phone is still running or not; otherwise, a short circuit may occur and permanent damage may occur. If the phone is on, press and hold the power button until it turns off completely.
Remove removable parts
Now remove all the removable parts. This includes the SIM card, microSD card, and if the battery is removable, remove it too. This allows air to enter inside and reduces the risk of a short circuit. If the phone has a cover, remove it too.
Dry the phone
Now gently dry the outer surface of the phone. Use a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel to wipe off any water from the phone. Clean thoroughly, but avoid shaking or jostling the phone as this can spread the water further inside. Do not use a hair dryer, oven, or microwave – these can damage internal parts.
Do not use the rice trick.
The most important step is to dry the inside. The popular 'rice trick' is often heard, but it is not the most effective. Rice can absorb some moisture, but its starch can damage ports if it gets into them. A better way is to use silica gel packets. These small packets, which often come with new shoes or electronic items, are designed to draw out moisture. Place your phone in an airtight container or Ziploc bag with the silica packets.
If you do not have silica gel, place the phone in a ventilated area with good air flow. You can also place it in front of a fan, but avoid direct heat. Place the phone in a position that allows water to drain out of the ports.
Leave the phone for 48 to 72 hours
Leave the phone to dry for at least 48 to 72 hours. Patience is key here. If you try to turn it on too quickly, the risk of permanent damage increases. Do not try to check repeatedly during this time.
Turn the phone on
Try to turn the phone on after a long drying period. If it does not turn on, connect it to the charger for a while. If it still does not turn on or shows any strange behavior (such as screen blinking or sound problems), seek professional help. Take the phone to a trusted repair shop where special equipment can be used to thoroughly dry the phone and check for damaged parts.
Prevention is better
Remember, prevention is always better. If you often use the phone around water, make sure to use a waterproof case. But if such an accident ever happens, correct and timely action can save a lot.
