Digvesh Rathi, Lucknow Super Giants mystery spinner, has caught everyone's eye with miserly spells, wickets, his celebrations and hairstyle. He has already been penalised twice for his extravagant ‘notebook’ celebration but the tweaker hopes he can script a memorable season for himself and the franchise.
In an interview with TOI, Rathi talked about various parts of his game, including why he took up leg spin, his formative years, his idol and other things.
Early days and leg spin
The 25-year-old revealed that he started off as a batter but used to bowl to senior batters as warmup. Rathi, whose action resembles Sunil Narine's, said he learnt from watching the Caribbean spin legend when he was a net bowler for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.
The Delhi-based spinner told TOI that he never really learnt the basics because he only liked "mystery bowling". He said that he found great joy while beating batters in the nets even though he used to bat.
Talking about his early days, he said he played at a complex in Dilshad Garden (in Delhi), where a senior team mate, Robin Bisht, advised him to focus on bowling. It was only then that he started bowling seriously.
He elaborated on mystery spin and said that the bowler's usually keep things to themselves. He cited the examples of Afghanistan's Mujeeb ur Rehman and Varun Chakravarthy, who keep their tricks to themselves.
Impact of Delhi Premier League
Rathi said that the Delhi Premier League had created a massive impact not just on him, but on other players in Delhi as well, adding that it was a big platform for the cricketers of the region. The spinner, who bagged 14 wickets in DPL, said that players who do not get an opportunity to play for Delhi in domestic cricket, have a chance to showcase their talent in the league.
A special moment
Rathi said getting the wicket of his idol Sunil Narine was a special moment. He revealed that he had come up with a strategy for the West Indian.
He added that he also had a special plan for Punjab Kings opener Priyansh Arya, adding that regular balls would not get him out. Rathi said that he worked with LSG coaches Justin Langer and Vijay Dahiya to develop a new variation as Arya would pick his googly.
