Samir Modi has been freed of charges in a defamation case filed by independent directors of Godfrey Phillips India in which he was a director himself until last year, as per a south Delhi court order that ET has seen.
Modi was accused of defamation by three directors of the company – Lalit Bhasin, Nirmala Bagri and Atul Kumar Gupta – all of whom alleged their reputations had been tainted by certain remarks made in the public domain in the aftermath of a boardroom tussle at the company.
Modi who is the son of Godfrey Phillips’ chairperson Bina Modi had alleged that he was assaulted at the company’s board meeting on 31 May 2024 by his mother’s personal security officer. He blamed the company’s directors for conspiring to have him assaulted.
Samir Modi who is the youngest of three siblings, his brother is former Indian Premier League boss Lalit Modi and sister is Charu Modi, was sacked from the board of the tobacco maker founded by late tycoon KK Modi on 7th August last year.
Godfrey Phillips sells tobacco and is the partner of Marlboro maker Phillip Morris in India.
Recently, Samir Modi’s claims about the assault on him being a fallout of a conspiracy involving his mother and Lalit Bhasin did not stand the test of a police investigation. Delhi police has not charged his mother or Bhasin after its investigation was completed but did file charges against her personal security officer, Surendra Prasad.
Lalit Bhasin who is a Delhi-based lawyer who has stepped down from Godfrey Phillips’s board told ET in an interview last year that his reputation was harmed by Modi’s comments. He said ‘defamatory, libelous outrageous allegations’ had been made against him.
