Filmmaker Aanand L Rai, who has been at loggerheads with Eros International after it was announced that the film Raanjhanaa will be re-released with an altered climax made using AI, shared that even the leads of the film, Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, are not happy with the move.
Speaking to Times Now, Rai said, "Nobody approves of this. Who would like it, and why? A character that has already been established, and it takes years to truly live a story. An actor invests a major part of their life into it, and you suddenly want to change it? How is that even possible?"
He went on to say, "There’s always a reason why a story is told. What is the intention behind telling this particular story? It belongs to a genre called tragedy, which has its own flavour. The audience connects with it. You can’t simply change a story by rewriting the ending. An actor brings layers of emotions to a character, which actually gives weight to the genre. You can’t just say, ‘Let’s change the ending, now no one dies, and everyone lives happily.’ That’s not how stories are told."
Eros DENIES Aanand L Rai's Claims Over Raanjhanaa AI-Generated Ending: 'Respectful Reinterpretation, Not Tampering Of Original'Rai also said that while Eros, who produced Raanjhanaa, has the legal right to the film, the production house should have respected the storyteller, actors and the audience's reaction to the tragic end.
"You want to reimagine it just because you want to, without involving the people who originally created it. That’s not right. And I want to understand the intention behind it. It’s not a good intention to leave the original creators out of the process," he said.
The filmmaker then stated that a clause must be introduced in film contracts in the future to protect a storyteller's story. "I believe that new contracts must include clauses to protect creators from this kind of tampering with their work. If someone wants to re-release a film, fine. They’ve put in the money, that’s their right. But they cannot alter the creation. The IP must be released in its original form," he said.
