Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) heavyweight leader Anubrata Mondal on Saturday had skipped a police summon citing health issues. According to the police sources, the lawyers had visited the SDPO office and informed them that Mondal is ‘not well’.
However, the lawyers who had visited the SDPO office refused to comment on the development and mentioned that their visit was for some other purpose. Notably, the police had served a second notice to Mondal and had asked him to be present on Sunday.
Even though Mondal didn’t visit the SDPO office, he visited the party office in the afternoon and was there for over four hours. Amid speculation of meeting with party members, TMC legislator Chandranath Sinha said that no such meeting took place and also that Mondal is ‘not well’.
Crying foul, the opposition claimed that Mondal should be arrested immediately. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president and MoS Sukanta Majumdar said that the police should ‘drag Mondal by his collar from his house’.
“I want to question the IC of Bolpur station whom Anubrata Mondal had abused. Can he go back home and face his mother and sister for not taking any action against Mondal for abusing them? So far we have seen that when one gets summoned from CBI or Enforcement Directorate (ED) they pretend to fall sick. Now people are getting sick by getting a police summons. DG Rajiv Kumar should also intervene in the matter,” said Majumdar.
Former Congress state president and former MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury stated that such leaders should be ‘caned’.
