Manchester United are weighing up late moves for two players after their humiliating exit from the Carabao Cup. United were knocked out of the tournament on penalties by League Two side Grimsby. Grimsby went 2-0 up in the first half thanks to strikes from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, but late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire sent the tie to penalties - only for Grimsby to emerge victorious 12-11.
The humiliating defeat means United are still searching for their first win of the season and ramps up the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim. United have strengthened their squad this summer, forking out over £200million to bring in the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Mbeumo and Cunha. Yet, the Red Devils are still looking at adding more new signings and a midfielder is top of the list, having cooled their interest in Carlos Baleba with Brighton demanding more than £100m for the 21-year-old.
Now, late window moves for two potential alternatives are being weighed up, with Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton and Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand both in the crosshairs of club chiefs, as first reported by The Athletic.

United will be back in action on Saturday when they host Burnley at Old Trafford will be desperate to see a much improved performance from his side.
"In the end it doesn't matter if we recover or not," Amorim said after the loss to Grimsby. "I know the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose because any players can win against any group of players. I think the players spoke really loud today. The best team won.
"I think it's really clear what they spoke. Let's move on from this day. I think it was really clear what happened today." When asked what went wrong, Amorim replied: "I don't know. Not just the space but the way we start the game without any intensity, any idea of pressure.

"We were completely lost. They spoke really loud. I think that [the same issues] is a problem. When you lose and see something new, it is different. We have to say sorry to the fans.
"The support that they gave us with all of the defeats, I just have to say I’m really sorry. I think they [the players] gave the response on the pitch today so I don’t have to talk about that.
"We have a game at the weekend and then we have two weeks and we will sort things out."
