Paul Scholes addresses his major problem with Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim

Paul Scholes has accused Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim of being too honest for his own good.

United boss Amorim gave an emotional and blunt interview in the wake of his side's shock EFL Cup exit to League Two Grimsby last week. Amorim said his players “spoke really loudly about what they want” with their woeful display, which United legend Scholes said was a mistake to say.

“I quite like Amorim,” said Scholes. “He's very honest and can be too honest. He's saying what every manager probably thinks at some point, but I don’t think you say that out loud.

“There are so many experienced managers in the Premier League who will be thinking that, and I’ve thought that, but they won’t say it.

“The worst comment for me was after the Grimsby game, where he said that the players spoke out loud – I thought that was a little bit damning for him.

Asked what he felt Amorim meant, Scholes said: “That the players don’t want to play for him."

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said: “The problem with Amorim is that he’s great in the press conferences but because he’s not winning, people are thinking, ‘Oh, shut up. Stop speaking.’ But if he was winning, we’d all be thinking he’s a great character and personality.

“If he wasn’t so charismatic in the press conference, and wasn’t such a good-looking man, he might have lost his job a lot earlier. When you look at the results, they are horrendous.”

Scholes also claimed United had messed up in the transfer window by failing to address their midfield, which he claimed was a priority to strengthen.

“We talk about recruitment and United haven’t addressed the areas which needed addressing,” said Scholes. “They needed to address the midfield – the legs were never in there.

“Amorim has got four or five midfield players, and he wants to play two of them, but he can’t get it right, he can’t get the combination right.”
