Salford fire horror as huge smoke plume seen for miles over city

Huge plumes of smoke have been seen rising across a city skyline this afternoon as concerned residents have taken to social media to show the worrying scenes.

Photos show a huge plume of black smoke rising over , with pictures shared online showing that the sight is being seen for miles. crews have been reported at the scene this afternoon, with Greater Manchester(GMFRS) confirming fire engines had been sent to Duchy Road. One user took to X to share a picture of the view from The Quays in Salford toward Salford Precinct, with a towering plume of smoke seen dominating the skyline.

It is understood the fire is located toward the Buile Hill area of Salford. Greater . Smoke has been seen rising from Salford in Manchester's city centre, as well as Whitefield, on the northern side of the city.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "AT shortly before 1.50pm on Tuesday two fire engines from Agecroft, Broughton and Salford fire stations were called to a fire involving a large pile of tyres off Duchy Road, Salford. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using jets to tackle the fire. Crews remain in attendance."

Duchy Road lies between Salford and Pendlebury, running through a housing estate, down the side of a large green space and football pitches before intersecting with an industrial estate area. Concerned residents took to social media to share pictures and videos of the smoke dominating the skyline.

Many were asking for more information on the fire shortly after fire crews say it broke out with one user asking: "Anyone know where the Salford fire is? Looks to be north-west of the uni?"

Another said: "Whatever the big fire in Salford is, it can also be seen from Whitefield". While a third just stated: "Something is on fire in Salford."

It comes just days after smoke was spotted billowing over the London skyline for miles after a blaze broke out at a scrap metal site. The London Fire Brigade were called to the scene in Dagenham just after 2pm on Sunday after the alarm was raised at an industrial estate.

10 fire engines arrived on the scene to battle the flames with around 70 firefighters working to tackle the blaze. Due to the scale of the fire, a 32-metre turntable ladder was deployed to reach the flames as scrap metal and numerous vehicles burned.

Footage of the terrifying inferno is being shared on social media. Clips show the thick acrid smoke billowing into the air, clouding the London skyline. One social media user said the smoke was "visible for miles around". MyLondon reported that the flames could be seen as far away as Greenwich, around 15 miles away.

Call operators for the fire brigade said they have received more than 50 calls about the incident. The first came at 14.09pm, leading Brigade Control Officers to mobilise crews from Dagenham, Barking, Wennington, Hornchurch and surrounding fire stations. At 16.30pm, the fire brigade said the blaze was under control though firemen and women will remain on site to fully extinguish the flames.
