Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rain till September 29 under the influence of two back-to-back low-pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.
According to the midday bulletin, a low-pressure area has moved over to coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to persist over the same region during the next 24 hours and become less marked thereafter.
Another low pressure area is likely to form over northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal around 25 September. “Moving nearly westwards, it is very likely to become a depression over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal off South Odisha- North Andhra Pradesh coasts on September 26 and cross South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts the following day,” it said.
The weather agency has issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/ lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for eight districts for four days.
The warning has been issued for the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Koraput and Malkangiri on September 23; Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur on September 24; Koraput, Malkangiri on September 25, and Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur on September 26.
On September 23, heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Ganjam, Gajapati. Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Sonepur and Boudh. Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Nuapada, Balangir, Nabarangpur, Bargarh, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kendrapara, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.
On September 24, heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bargarh, Sonepur, Deogarh, Boudh, and Angul. Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Dhenkanal.
On September 25, heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur at one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Rayagada.
Thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.
Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
On September 26, heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur at one or two places in Ganjam and Gajapati districts. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Nuapada.
Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.
Thunderstorm along with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
The intensity of rain is likely to gradually decrease thereafter.
On September 27, heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may continue at one or two places in Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati and Puri. Heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Nabarangpur and Kalahandi.
Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Khurda, Nayagarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj Thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balangir, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Boudh and Sonepur districts.
Heavy may continue at one or two places in Nabarangpur and Nuapada on September 28 and Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar on September 29.
The IMD further stated that squally weather may prevail with wind speed 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph from September 23 to 24and 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph from September 25-27 over North Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coasts. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along & off Odisha coasts and North Bay of Bengal during this period.
