BBC Mastermind champion also scooped huge prize on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

The winner of BBC 2's grand final has been revealed to have been a previous contestant on the ITV game show, , who scooped half a million pounds.

John Robinson was crowned the 2025 Mastermind Champion on Monday, 19 May, on Two after a nail-biting finish that saw the school teacher from Sutton Coldfield pip fellow player Claire Reynolds at the very last hurdle.

Drawing the show's 52nd series to a close, John won with a massive 30 points after getting the very last question of the entire series correct. He previously got 12 points during the round on his specialist subject - The Empire State Building. In honour of the famous building, he wore a shirt illustrated with the iconic New York skyscraper.

Speaking about his impressive win, John said: "I cannot quite believe that I have won the final of Mastermind. I'm not often lost for words, but I think this is one of those occasions where I don't know what to say...I'm just delighted."

At the end, John revealed he had been on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2019, and had won a cool £500,000. However, the first-time Mastermind player admitted winning the prestigious Glass Bowl was something that "money can't buy".

In his day job as an English teacher, John revealed his pupils and colleagues had been following his Mastermind journey with great aplomb. His School Principal Dr James Coughlan told the BBBC: "We're incredibly proud of John, all the hard work he's put into Mastermind this year, and we've got that space waiting for the Glass Bowl in the trophy cabinet".

John added: "I constantly tell the students that I teach, if you put effort into your revision, you'll get reward at the end of it so hopefully the kids can look at me and be inspired by the hard work that I've put in as well."

Commenting on the final, host Clive Myrie said: "What a cracking final it was! A nerve-jangler right to the very end. Congratulations to all our contenders for making it a memorable series, and to John, who did himself proud."

John appeared on the 7th episode of the 32nd series of the UK version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? on 4 March 2019. He was the first contestant to reach the £1,000,000 question since Ingram Wilcox in 2006 and is one of just nine contestants ever to win that much prize money.
