Netflix's chilling true crime drama has been hailed a "masterpiece" after viewers got "goosebumps" from David Tennant's portrayal of the cold and detached serial killer, Dennis Nilsen. The prolific Scottish murderer was arrested in 1983 after remains were discovered in a manhole outside his home. As police investigated, they uncovered a web of at least 12 men and boys who were killed by Dennis.

However, unlike other suspects who deny all allegations or prefer to repeat "no comment," Dennis casually and callously told officers where they could find the rest of the bodies. After the ITV drama was added to Netflix on November 2, the drama has skyrocketed and currently sits in third place on the streamer's Top 10 list of shows in the UK. The three-part series, which also stars Line of Duty actors Daniel Mays and Jason Watkins, as well as Ben Bailey Smith, has been inundated with praise.

Following its 2020 release, Tennant has continued to receive acclaim for his "outstanding" portrayal, accuracy and uncanny resemblance to Dennis.

Taking to IMDb, one fan penned: "Possibly the greatest role David has played to date. Utterly creepy whilst deadly smart. A gripping drama that will make you really question what mankind is capable of at the worst of times."

Another added: "David Tennant's portrayal of Dennis Nilsen is chilling. His resemblance to the serial killer is frighteningly uncanny. This is yet another masterclass in acting from Tennant, who really can perform any role he is given at an extraordinarily high level."

A third echoed: "Some extremely fine acting, a compelling and horrifying true story done right by the cast! One of the best mini series for a while on ITV!"

Another fan shared: "It's creepy but intense! I really enjoyed it! Everyone who likes thrillers and true stories should give it a try!"

"This was such a well-written and well-developed script! Absolutely amazing acting by David Tennant, who deserves all the awards for this. Knocked it out of the park. Daniel Myers and Jason Watkins were wonderful as well. All in all, a very well-acted and sensitive real-life drama," said a fifth.

As one added: "This is truly a masterpiece in acting, the chilling storyline left me covered in goosebumps. Highly recommend this to fans of thrilling crime dramas."

The real Dennis was sentenced to life in prison on November 4 1983, after being found guilty of six counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Nilsen died in police custody on May 12 2018, at the age of 72.
