A popular Spanish hotspot that has been loved by Brits for decades has eerily been left "empty" astourists seemingly turn their backs on the resort. Renowned for its selection of bustling bars and nightlife Benidorm also promises sun seekers 300 days of glorious sunshine.
However, Benidorm is now covered by a cloud of doom with footage showing the usually bustling holiday resort looking strangely deserted in what should be its peak summer season. One holidaymaker has shared videos on what Benidom looks like during the "height of summer" with the once busy strip branded an "absolute ghost town". Taking to TikTok @yorkshirebargainhunter video left fellow Brits gobsmacked at how quiet the resort is, particularly given the destination's longstanding popularity amongst British holidaymakers.
He said: "If you're in Benidorm right now, what do you think? Why do you think it's so quiet? Why is nobody around? Even this bar here is fully shut down.
"We're in the height of summer. Everywhere should be absolutely rammed, but it's not. It's absolutely dead. This is one of the main strips in Benidorm and it should be absolutely rammed."
In the video once bustling bars were empty, with endless rows of tables unoccupied. Elsewhere, some establishments were completely closed.
"This is just how dead it is in Spain right now," he adds.
He continues: "All the streets are absolutely empty and we're in the height of summer. All these should be filled up, the doors should be open and it should be absolutely going crazy.
"That's because of all the tourism in Spain with the locals kicking off saying they don't want us here, and now all of a sudden, it's absolutely dead."
In response some tourists expressed that Spain should be careful of what they wish for after the wave of overtourism protests that have erupted in the Mediterranean over the past year.
In response to the TikTok one holidaymaker said: "They told us not to come. What did they expect?"
Another chimed in with: "Spain stopped wanting tourists hence they might have gone elsewhere."
However, some had a different experience, claiming the resort was "bouncing" during their visit. Another tourist shared: "I'm here now. It's rammed - busiest I've seen Benidorm."
Another added: "It's busy at night, not the day time."
Reports suggest that Spain has been deserted by many tourists, with restaurants and beaches appearing almost deserted.
Parts of the country are experiencing a severe drop in visitor numbers for the first time since the pandemic.
Earlier this year pictures from Majorca showed rows of vacant seats outside numerous bars and eateries alongside surprisingly vacant beaches.
Last month Juanmi Ferrer, president of the CAEB Restaurants Association, issued a stark warning that"hundreds of restaurants will close this year; the summer hasn't been good".
He added: "The situation is very difficult. We are very worried about businesses' bottom lines. Many won't be able to survive. We haven't had such a bad summer since before the pandemic."
