Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur are both hoping for the same thing to happen at the US Open this year. The two players have been in a relationship for the last five years, emerging as one of the most prominent tennis couples. They announced their engagement towards the end of last year, with Boulter taking to Instagram to show off her ring.
Both players will be in action at the US Open, with Boulter being handed a tough draw. She will face Marta Kostyuk in her opening match and is likely to head into the contest as the underdog. De Minaur, meanwhile, will go up against fellow Australian player Christopher O'Connell in the first round.
Ahead of the tournament starting this weekend, the couple were involved in a promotional video in which several players were asked what they wanted to experience at Flushing Meadows. They took part in separate interviews but they both said the same thing.
"I mean, on the tennis side of things, there is nothing really better than night matches at the US Open," explained De Minaur. "Have that energy, have that buzz of the crowd. That would be great."
Boulter also expressed her desire to play under the lights at the biggest tennis venue in the world, saying: "I would love to experience a night match on [Arthur] Ashe [Stadium]. That would be really cool."
It comes after the happy couple were denied a wildcard entry into the revamped US Open mixed doubles. Several top singles players teamed up for the new-look competition but doubles specialists Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori took the trophy home.
Boulter made no secret of her desire to take part alongside her fiance, but her pleas ended up falling on deaf ears.
"It would be a privilege to play, we have played mixed before," said the Brit. "It would be nice to get on the court with him. Yeah, it would be nice to get the chance. I'm not sure what we are going to try and do to get one."
De Minaur also begged US Open organisers for a wildcard without success, saying: "I think we're doing our best to put a really good case forward to hopefully get that wildcard.
"Yeah, I mean, one of the most enjoyable moments I've had on a tennis court was playing Wimbledon mixed doubles with her. As I said, it was pretty damn cool, so I would love to go back and play again.
"To play such an exciting event with the world's best tennis players would be pretty cool, so hopefully they give us a chance to do that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed."
