McDonald's has removed an item from its menu just days after it was launched. The fast food chain confirmed the item is no longer on menus due to a "quality control issue."
This follows a number of complaints about the new Caramel Loaded McFlurry, which was introduced on Wednesday, September 10. It has now been pulled from outlets across the UK, and a McDonald's spokesperson has apologised for any inconvenience.
As reported by the Mirror, the McFlurry came under fire from customers after being launched. The dessert was described as soft dairy ice cream swirled with caramel cubes, white chocolate-covered shortbread pieces, and milk chocolate chips, all topped off with a caramel sauce.
However, disgruntled customers claimed the caramel cubes were actually "rock hard". Helen Richards wrote on Facebook: "Be careful the caramel bits in it are rock hard."
Meanwhile, Reddit user @juiceforsyth compared the dessert to "gnawing on a roof tile". But others seemed to enjoy the item, with @Adventurous_Low_8497 saying: "Don't know about anyone else, but I quite liked the hard caramel pieces."
Speaking to Belfast Live on September 17, a spokesperson for McDonald's said: "We are aware of a quality control issue relating to the Caramel Loaded McFlurry and can confirm that the item has been removed from our menu.
"At McDonald's, we place a strong emphasis on quality control and are disappointed by any instance where we fall short of our standards. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
The recent menu refresh came as McDonald's Monopoly returned to restaurants. To celebrate the game's comeback, the Breakfast Wrap returned to the breakfast menu while several favourites such as mozzarella dippers, the Philly Cheese Stack and a Chicken Big Mac burger were also introduced.
A new Honeycombe Latte was also introduced, along with the Caramel Loaded McFlurry. However, a couple of items were removed during the promotion, and Sprite Zero with syrup and the Jaffa Cakes McFlurry are now unavailable on UK menus.
