UK households urged to check for cracks in kitchen in September

Autumn brings with itself an increased cockroach activity, a pest control expert has watned. James Copley, owner at Copley Pest Solutions, told residents that cockroaches thrive in the warm, humid environments created when heating systems are activated after months of being dormant. In autumn, central heating systems are switched on across the UK, creating good conditions for the pests.

In a recent advisory notice, Copley explained the combination of warming indoor temperatures and declining outdoor temperatures creates ideal conditions for dormant insect populations to become active and reproduce.

He said: "Cockroaches hiding in dark, undisturbed areas during summer months suddenly find perfect breeding conditions when homes warm up."

"These pests carry various bacteria including E. coli and Salmonella," Copley explained. "They also produce allergens that can trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals." He added that prevention works better than treating established infestations. "Check for gaps around pipes, seal cracks in walls and floors, and keep food stored in airtight containers," he told clients.

Given how cockroaches respond to warmer indoor environments, Copley stressed the importance of good hygiene alongside heating maintenance. "Vacuum regularly, wipe surfaces clean of food residue, and fix any leaking pipes promptly," he said. Homeowners spotting cockroach activity should act quickly. "A female cockroach produces many offspring, which means small problems become major infestations rapidly," Copley warned.

Besides warmth, the insects seek water sources and food. This makes kitchens particularly vulnerable to infestation. Copley recommends professional inspection before heating season begins. "This allows identification of potential problems before they develop into full infestations," he explained.

Regular maintenance of heating systems, combined with good hygiene practices, reduces the risk of cockroach problems during autumn and winter months.
