Motorists spend hours on motorways every week, and millions take to Britain's most popular routes, which are the M25, the M6, the M4, and the M1. The sheer amount of traffic on the road means that delays are almost a certainty, with previous studies showing each driver loses as many as 31 hours a year due to delays on motorways and A-roads.
Two years ago Express.co.uk put together a poll looking to find what motorists consider to be the UK's worst motorway. After more than 24 months, the survey received a staggering 22,631 responses and almost a unanimous decision.
The M25 topped the list with a staggering 10,857 votes - 48% of the total responses. The road was also the AA Members' pick of the UK's worst motorway just months ago.
The M25, also known as the London Orbital, handles 15% of all UK motorway traffic, almost 200,000 vehicles every day. The route is renowned for its frequent delays.
Motorists also raised concerns over drivers' speed and pointed out problems with the auto signage gantry boards.
The M6 was next in the Express poll, with 4,194 readers, 18% of those polled, claiming the route was the worst. The M62 was third (7%), followed by the M1 with 1,430 votes or 6% of the total responses.
The M5 (4%), M4 (3%) and M60 (2%) were next, with the top 10 rounded out by the M8 (2%) and the M40 (1%).
