Weeds will suffocate and dry up using a method with 1 surprising kitchen item

A gardening expert has shared how you can tackle unwanted and damaging weeds without affecting your other plants. Ish, garden designer and TikTok creator, revealed his unusual method involves a sandwich bag, which can be used to dehydrate and suffocate unruly bindweed.

Bindweed is a perennial plant which can become a persistent problem in gardens. It can be recognised by its long twining stems and large white trumpet flowers. It can grow to form a large mass of foliage, choking garden plants, reducing their growth or killing smaller plants entirely. According to the Royal Horticultural Society, bindweed will compete with other plants for moisture, nutrients, space and light.

Ish explained that he keeps his bindweed from "going mad" by compactly planting his garden borders. This will help reduce the amount of sunlight from reaching the soil and slows down the growth of the bindweed.

However if you find that the bindweed in your garden has grown lengthy, you can stop it - but Ish warned "extreme measures" may be needed. Firstly, try to unwind the bindweed without pulling it out of the ground, clumping it together.

Don't detach the weeds from the main stem. Place the clumped weeds together and put it into a sandwich bag.

If you can find the tip of the bindweed, give it a pinch to leave the end exposed. Then spray a natural or shop-bought weed killer in the bag, before sealing the bag up.

Ish said: "As a result, all the chemicals that you don't want on your plants are contained in this bag and on the bindweed. It will slowly work its way down to this and to the root, and as a result, keeps these nice and safe, and these a little less so."

This method can also be used on bindweed that's growing on box hedges too. When it comes to weed killers, Ish said you can use a natural-based solution, which is made up of water, salt and white vinegar.

This will help to dehydrate the plant substantially, but will not "finish off the root", he warned. There may be some natural weed killers that kill the root, but you should look out for weed killers that break down microorganisms in the ground.

Ish said: "If you do go for a natural one and you dehydrate this, because it is so compact down there, it will actually stop and slow its growth massively. So it doesn't really matter which one you use, just do the one that's right for your garden."
