KANPUR: A motorcyclist died during a race between two cars involving an Innova and a BMW in the Kidwainagar area of the city late on Friday night. During the race, the Innova hit Naveen Gupta (42) with great force, causing him to be thrown 20mt away and hit a parked car. He died on the spot due to grievous wounds.

The accident happened around 10:56pm near the South Cricket Academy in Kidwainagar. According to eyewitnesses, the way both cars were moving at such high speed, it seemed like the drivers were racing each other. When the BMW moved ahead, the Innova directly hit Gupta, who was coming from the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that Naveen was thrown into another car parked by the roadside and died instantly. The car driver, Kabir said that as soon as he felt something hit the car, he got out and saw a man lying injured. The car that hit him fled the scene.

CCTV footage shows the Innova speeding at around 100 km/h, and as soon as it hit Gupta's bike, he was flung away. After the accident, the Innova's driver fled the scene, but was later arrested as the car's number plate fell off at the accident site. Upon investigation, it came to the fore that the Innova had 'Govt of India' printed on it and bore the logo of a central investigation agency.

The investigation revealed that the Innova was registered in the name of Gopal Bajpai, a contractor residing in the Lajpatnagar area of the city. Initially, he blamed the BMW driver for the accident, but police investigations showed that Ayush Mishra from Yashodanagar was driving the car. When the police took Ayush into custody, he was found to be in an inebriated state.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Babupurwa, Dilip Kumar Singh, stated, "Around 10:56pm, an Innova car hit a motorcyclist near the South Cricket Academy in the Kidwainagar area, resulting in his immediate death. The police identified the vehicle's owner and driver on the basis of the registration number plate of the Innova that broke down and fell on the spot, besides using CCTV footage. The accused driver has been arrested, and a case has been filed against him under relevant sections, with further investigation underway. We are investigating the eyewitnesses' accusation of the race between two cars by examining CCTV footage." Gupta was a private worker and lived in rented house near National Inter College in Kidwainagar. He went out at night with his landlord's bike to purchase milk. Four years ago, one of his brothers also died in a road accident, while another brother is mentally ill. His elder brother Ajay runs a paan shop in Kidwainagar.
