Google CEO Sundar Pichai called AI overviews as one of the most successful launches in Search in the past 10 years. Speaking on Day 1 of Google I/O 2025 , Pichai said “It’s one of the most successful launches in Search in the past decade,” highlighting how the company’s AI tools are changing the way people use Google . “Our Gemini models are helping to make Google Search more intelligent, agentic and personalized,” he said.

In his keynote speech, Pichai revealed that Google’s AI Overviews — short AI-generated summaries on search result pages — have now reached more than 1.5 billion users across 200 countries and territories since the launch. For those unaware, Google introduced AI overviews in Search in 2024.

Pichai said:

“Since launching last year, AI Overviews have scaled to over 1.5 billion users and are now in 200 countries and territories.” He added “As people use AI Overviews, we see they’re happier with their results, and they search more often.”

Calling the U.S. and India as the biggest markets, the Google CEO noted that “AI Overviews are driving over 10% growth in the types of queries that show them, and this growth increases over time.”

“It’s one of the most successful launches in Search in the past decade,” he added.

Google introduces new AI Mode in Search
Along with Overviews, Pichai announced at Google I/O 2025 that it is launching a new feature called AI Mode for users who want a fully AI-powered search experience.

“For those who want an end-to-end AI Search experience, we’re introducing an all-new AI Mode. It’s a total reimagining of Search.”

AI Mode allows users to ask longer, more complex questions and continue the conversation with follow-up queries. The experience is powered by the latest Gemini models and appears as a new tab inside Search.

Pichai revealed that he has been using the AI mode in Search “a lot, and it’s completely changed how I use Search.”

AI Mode in Search available in U.S. starting today

AI Mode is rolling out in the U.S. starting today, with plans to expand to other countries soon. The experience is backed by Gemini 2.5, which Pichai said delivers fast and accurate answers.

“With our latest Gemini models our AI responses are at the quality and accuracy you've come to expect from Search, and are the fastest in the industry,” Pichai said.

“And starting this week, Gemini 2.5 is coming to Search in the U.S., as well.”
