Google I/O 2025: Android Auto to get video, browser and more

Google kickstarted its annual developer conference — Google I/O 2025 on May 20. Along with all the usual announcements the company also announced a significant expansion of the app ecosystem for Android Auto , bringing highly anticipated features like video and browser applications, alongside a wider array of weather apps. Google claims that these features will enhance the in-car experience and will offer more utility and entertainment. The tech giant also revealed that Android Auto is now supported in nearly all new cars sold, with almost 250 million compatible vehicles on the road.


Video and browser apps coming to Android AutoGoogle announced that it will soon roll out video and browser applications to Android Auto. The company has also specified that the video apps will require the connected phone to run Android 16 operating system. The company also clarified that the video functionality will work only on select compatible cars and only when the vehicle is parked.


Weather apps coming to Android AutoThe "Weather" app category has officially graduated from its beta phase for both Android Auto and Android Automotive. This means that developers can now publish weather applications without requiring additional approval, provided they adhere to Google's quality guidelines. As a result, users can anticipate a much broader selection of weather apps appearing on their car displays.

These additions are part of Google's ongoing efforts to expand the types of applications available for in-car use. The company has been steadily adding new categories, including games, which are already accessible for use when the vehicle is stationary.
