The Trump administration formally asked the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, citing the Ivy League school’s alleged failure to address antisemitism on campus, multiple sources within the Department of Justice (DOJ) told Fox News.
The administration argues that Harvard’s conduct violates conditions required to maintain its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. The IRS is expected to make a final determination in the coming weeks, CNN reported.
This latest move marks a sharp escalation in the administration’s crackdown on elite universities accused of tolerating antisemitic incidents amid rising tensions on US campuses. It comes just weeks after the DOJ launched a sweeping review of Harvard’s federal contracts and grants, following similar scrutiny of Columbia University.
President Donald Trump, who has frequently criticised Ivy League institutions, posted a scathing attack on Harvard via social media, writing, “Harvard has been hiring almost all woke, Radical Left, idiots and ‘birdbrains’ who are only capable of teaching FAILURE to students and so-called ‘future leaders’.” He added, “Harvard is a JOKE, teaches Hate and Stupidity, and should no longer receive Federal Funds.”
The Department of Education had earlier announced it would review over $255 million in contracts and nearly $9 billion in grants involving Harvard and its affiliates. “Harvard’s failure to protect students on campus from anti-Semitic discrimination — all while promoting divisive ideologies over free inquiry — has put its reputation in serious jeopardy,” said Education Secretary Linda McMahon.
“Harvard has served as a symbol of the American Dream for generations,” McMahon added, “but it must uphold its responsibility to ensure student safety and academic integrity.”
