New Delhi, April 28 — Residents of Delhi can expect much-needed relief from the intense summer heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for thunderstorms and rain over the next two days. Starting Monday, changes in weather conditions are expected, with a significant dip in temperatures forecast for Tuesday.
According to IMD, Delhi is likely to experience partly cloudy skies on Monday, with wind speeds ranging between 10 to 20 km/h. By Tuesday, the city could witness light rain accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, bringing down the soaring temperatures.
Temperature Trends and Weather ChangesOn Sunday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 41.3°C, which was 2.3°C above the seasonal average. The minimum temperature stood at 27.2°C, 3.4°C higher than normal, marking the hottest night of the season so far. Notably, this minimum temperature is the highest recorded since April 25, 2019, when Delhi registered a night temperature of 28°C.
The Ridge area endured the highest daytime heat with temperatures touching 42.4°C, while other locations like Safdarjung, Aya Nagar, and Pitampura also recorded temperatures above 41°C.
The IMD forecasts that Monday’s maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 41°C and 26°C respectively, with more significant cooling expected on Tuesday as rain and strong winds move across the region.
Air Quality Remains PoorEven as temperatures fluctuate, air quality remains a concern. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category for the seventh consecutive day. The Air Quality Index (AQI) measured 246 at 4 PM on Sunday.
CPCB’s AQI scale categorizes air quality from ‘good’ (0–50) to ‘severe’ (401–500). Persistent poor air quality poses health risks, especially for sensitive groups.
Authorities advise residents to stay updated on weather advisories and to take precautions, particularly during gusty winds and sudden rainfall expected over the next 48 hours.
